Think back to the third episode, "The Locked Room," when they're at the Light of the Way academy and Rust chats up the guy who's cutting the campus lawn. He's so inconspicuous that Rust ( Matthew McConaughey) and Marty ( Woody Harrelson) were once in his presence and didn't even realize it. His facial scars, described by witnesses as being hideous, are noticeable, sure, but not disgusting enough to make him stand out in a crowd. The infamous “spaghetti monster’s” cranial linguine is merely an unkempt, stringy hairdo. In and out of viewers lives faster than Martin Hart's trigger-finger around men who kidnap children. But if it really is just a gardner, a school, and a boat, then wouldn’t they have been better off seeing to their own “expanding circular fuck ups?” But if it’s too late to save themselves, at least they can play the hero one last time. And just like that, True Detective’s "spaghetti monster" is gone. These men speak of a “debt” they owe, and it’s clear that they’re hoping to redeem their wasted, broken lives by slaying a monster. I’m ready to tie it off.”), and Maggie astutely asks Marty if he came to say goodbye. Rust mentions plans of suicide (“My life has been a circle of degradation and violence. Wouldn’t it be a more compelling story if her troubled adult self was the result of Marty’s crimes, and not some vastly interconnected network?īoth detectives seem grimly headed towards the ultimate self-destruction. As we mentioned last week, Audrey bears a striking resemblance to Marty’s “crazy” female conquests. Audrey turned out the way she did not because of the larger danger, but because of the monster inside her own home. It’s possible that the show could be heading there, but I think it would weaken the overall message. Some believe that her mysterious unnamed boyfriend, or the fact that she goes off her meds, will somehow come into play. There have been some theories circulating that Audrey, Marty’s daughter, is somehow involved in the Carcosa conspiracy. After all, what else is this show about if not man’s talent for destruction? The idea of those everyday concepts being infused with terror because of the monstrosity of mortal men is brilliant. If it turns out to be true, then the three points on Rust’s conspiracy wall end up being a gardener, a school, and a boat. What if it’s the name of the boat? Would that be an incredibly frustrating reveal? A sort of Rosebud moment? Or is the idea of The Yellow King being a boat just me chasing another conspiracy theory? Maybe, but here’s why I like it. So what if The Yellow King isn’t a person. Perhaps someone should do a study as to why.” Is a boat involved in the disappearance of these children? Terry Guidry, the bereaved father who lost his boy Sonny, said the child’s boat (a pireaux) was all broken up as if it had been attacked by gators.

Earlier in the episode, Rust shows Marty a map that tracks the missing children.

The camera swings over to the water and slowly, eerily, a boat glides into frame. The Yellow King: What if it’s not a person at all? The final shot of the episode is not Errol’s tidy flat circles in the grass.
